Cycling Tour of Prenzlauer Berg

The Cycling Tour starts at Hotel Zarenhof Berlin Prenzlauer Berg on Schönhauser Allee 140. Turn right on Schönhauser Allee and head up to the intersection, then please turn left on Danziger Straße.

Kulturbrauerei
Ride onto Danziger Straße up to corner Knaackstr. Somewhat left from the corner you will find the entrance to Kulturbrauerei. This lovingly restored building complex was formerly a brewery – and is now a colorful place with theaters, galleries, cinemas and offices.

Knaackstraße

Push your bike through the Kulturbrauerei until you get to Sredzkistraße. Then turn first to the left – and shortly afterwards right into Knaackstraße. After a few meters you’ll arrive at Kollwitzplatz.

Kollwitzplatz

The Kollwitzplatz is the heart of Kollwitzkiez. Eponym for Kollwitzplatz and Kollwitzstraße was the socially committed German artist Käthe Kollwitz. In the middle of the square stands a Kollwitz-monument. Thursday’s and Saturday’s a large weekly market takes places here, where you’ll find food stalls and shops.

Senefelder Platz

Turn from the Knaackstraße right into Kollwitzstraße and follow it up to the Senefelder Platz. It was named after Alois Senefelder, the inventor of the planographic printing process lithography. Turn right and then turn left onto Schönhauser Allee.

Schönhauser Allee

You drive past the Pfefferberg – also a former brewery site where many facilities and an attractive beer garden are located. Head to the big intersection Schönhauser Allee / Torstraße. Cross it straight and continue onto the Schönhauser Allee.

Insider Tip: Finest Vietnamese Food at Good Morning Vietnam. Just to the left on the corner, this Vietnamese restaurant awaits you offering typical dishes and exotic drinks.

Linienstraße

Turn right again onto Linienstraße. Here you can cycle relaxed, because you are driving on a road for bikes. Bicycles have priority here. You may even go side by side. Continue straight until you pass Koppenplatz.

Koppenplatz

The Koppenplatz is a green area in the former Spandau suburb, which was planted at the end of the 19th century. In memory of the many Berlin residents of Jewish faith who were deported and murdered during the Nazi dictatorship, here is the monument “The Deserted Room”.

Ackerstraße
Turn right Ackerstraße and cross the Torstraße. Immediately on the right side you will come across the bar Muschi Obermaier, which, however, has opened only from 08.00 pm. If you do not make a night bike tour, you need to come back later. Just continue until you reach the Bernauer Strasse.

Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer

Just to the right you will find the Berlin Wall Memorial, the central place of remembrance of the German division. At this point the Bernauer Strasse was brutally divided on the day when the wall was built. One side of the street was suddenly in the eastern part of the city – the other side of the street in the western part. Many people jumping out of windows to escape to the west of Berlin.

Bernauer Straße

Continue on Bernauer Strasse. Left you see buildings which arose during the German division in the former West Berlin. On the right you can see how the area is developing, on which Wall and border plants stood. Turn right into the Swinemünder Str.

Swinemünder Straße

Keep going straight until you come across the Arkonaplatz. Cross this park, where on Sunday’s is held a small but successful flea market. Take the other side of the square through the Swinemünder Straße until you reach Zion Church.

Zion Church

The Zion Church was built in 1873. During the Nazi period the theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer worked here who was murdered for showing resistance and being a member of the Confessing Church by the Nazis. In GDR times, opposition groups met here. Continue on the Zionskirchstraße – and turn left onto the Kastanienallee.

Kastanienallee

The Kastanienallee got its name from the first planting with Buckeyes in 1826. In the vernacular, the road is called “Casting Alley” – probably because many good looking people and model agency scouts are here. Drive until you reach Oderberger Straße.

Oderberger Straße

The Oderberger Straße is one of the most famous streets in Berlin. It features many restaurants, cafes and boutiques to stroll, dine and shop. Here is one of the oldest professional fire departments in Germany. Go straight to the Eberswalder Straße.

Mauerpark

Cross the Eberswalder Straße and drive through the Mauerpark. This park was situated in GDR times directly on the wall. After the fall of the wall, the park has become a real crowd puller. Sunday’s a flea market and a large karaoke event take place, which attracts thousands of visitors.

Max-Schmeling-Halle

Go through the Mauerpark to Max-Schmeling-Halle. This multi-purpose arena was opened in 1996 by Max Schmeling – and was until 2008 the home arena of the National Basketball League team Alba Berlin. Go over the Falkplatz to Gleimstraße and then turn right.

Cantianstrasse

Take the Gleimstraße to the Cantian Straße and turn right into this. Follow this road to the end where you will reach the Schönhauser Allee. After a few meters you will see the Hotel Zarenhof Prenzlauer Berg on the right side.

Insider Tip: Enjoy an original Berlin Currywurst at the famous Konnopke’s snack bar. Max Konnopke founded the company in 1930 as a vendor’s tray. A snack bar was built only in 1960 at the present location. Since that time, the most famous Konnopke product is the Currywurst with ketchup.
